I love the bit in the sitcom Miranda where her friend Stevie pretends to be Heather Small and sings into the microphone:
‘What have you done today to make you feel proud?’
It makes me laugh but it is also funny (peculiar not ha ha!) how the line from that song stays in my head and niggles away. The question rearing itself when I least expect it.
I am not suggesting that we have to save the world, but I think we are also stumbling through life, so disheartened by the wave upon wave of depressing news on Social Media, that we have become numbed to what small changes we can make in our lives.
Sometimes just getting through the day is hard enough, but lately I have noticed there are days that are so busy, and yet when I reach the end of the day I feel I have achieved very little. We are most definitely creatures of habit. We fall out of bed and do whatever it takes to get us through the day, until we can numb ourselves with a drink or crashing out in front of the TV, or whatever takes us away from – heaven forbid – actually thinking about how to improve the quality of our lives.
I am not here to preach or to advocate goal setting or whipping yourself, or anything even remotely painful. I am just wondering how much better your life ‘might’ become if – instead of going zombie like through your day, you took a moment to stop, think about how you wanted your day to progress, and planned a couple of ideas to make your day more productive or inspiring.
I also know that the more I procrastinate on a task or a phone call, or something I don’t relish doing, the worse I feel. More often than not, it is never as bad as I think, and once it is done I wonder what all the fuss was about.
So, take a moment first thing in the morning and think about how you could live your life with more direction, more poise, more grace and more determined directional thinking. Those few minutes each day can make a huge difference to your life.
Then at the end of the day you can sing into your pretend microphone and answer that question with joy. And sure, isn’t that what life is all about – quality moments?
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
