There’s a lot of talk about leadership, but not enough action!

The other day whilst I was thinking how good people were at talking about leadership, and yet not demonstrating it, a song popped into my head from ‘My Fair Lady’ called ‘Show Me.’   Audrey Hepburn is basically fed up with talk – she wants to see action! 

‘Words Words Words
I’m so sick of words
I get words all day through
First from him, now from you
Is that all you blighters can do

Don’t talk of stars
Burning above
If you’re in love
Show me

Tell me no dreams
Filled with desire
If you’re on fire
Show me!’

It summed up exactly how I felt about all the talk I have recently being hearing about leadership.  There’s a lot of it about if you haven’t noticed!  What I am finding though, is that whilst I am seeing/hearing a lot of people talking about it, I also see a lack of action, and/or follow through.

What do I mean by that?

Well, people saying they will do things and not following through.  People promising to get back to someone and not doing it.  People saying, we need to act with more integrity, empathy and self-awareness, and then not demonstrating any of those traits.  

Where’s the action?  It’s great to hear all these words about leadership and self-awareness, but organisations are still rife with stress, lack of awareness and sadly even bullying.

Self-awareness is an essential first step for anyone who wants to put their words into action.  But there must be measurable actions put in place.  SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.)  Otherwise how can you know that you are developing as a leader?

If you are not following through, ask for feedback, get someone else to hold you accountable, do whatever it takes, but take action!

It’s not all doom and gloom.  I have met some fantastic young adults who are paving the way and showing us all what leadership is about.  More of that please!
